Wayne Edward MacGIllivray was born in Birch Hills, Saskatchewan on March 27, 1946 to Neil and Jean MacGillivray. He was the oldest of 3 children. Wayne was raised in Brancepeth and attended school in Birch Hills until, as he often put it, he walked in one door and out the other. He formally left school in Grade 9 and joined the workforce.
Wayne Married Karen Erickson in 1966, they moved to Brock Saskatchewan where they resided until they moved back to Kinistino in 1967. They had two children, Dwayne who was born in 1969 and Blair born in 1971. Karen's Brother Alfred and his daughter Pam also lived with them in Kinistino, for many years.
Wayne did several different jobs throughout his life. He worked with the Department of Highways, Pool elevator, Dodds Livestock and eventually purchased Riverview Abattoir and ran it for many years as his own business. When he decided to close the Abattoir he started driving fuel truck for R.Ford agro, then moved to Husky Fuel and then Farm gate agro. He eventually moved to Candle Lake where he continued to drive Truck for CNS Septic and then North Industrial Concrete where he worked until he could not work any longer. Wayne also did construction on the side with Jim Jackson and worked for Don and Gary Skene during harvest.
Wayne loved hockey and was very involved with coaching and managing several teams that Blair played for, not sure that Blair always thought this was a good thing. He and Karen often had a car full of kids on the way to games as they would take kids whose parents were not able to attend and often had several extra kids in their home as well.
Wayne served on the Kinistino Tiger executive and helped as the trainer for many years. He could often be seen cheering the team on, sometimes very loud and with some questionable language. He sometimes got so busy yelling and hanging over the boards, that he got hit in the head with a puck when he wasn’t paying attention and needed to get stitches. Wayne and Karen also took in billets over the years and there were two in particular, Dave and Troy, who stayed for a number of years and were a part of the family.
Wayne was a very social person who loved partying or a dance. He was well known for his dancing ability. He and Karen both loved to dance, they were often seen twirling around the dance floor and people often commented on how well they danced together. Wayne never lost his love of a good party and was social right up until the end. He was always happiest with people around and if there were a few beer involved, all the better.
Wayne also had a very colorful vocabulary and had a saying for everything, many of which were very inappropriate, but there are a few that we often think of and sometime repeat when safe to do so. He was happy when he was busy, and was often whistling when he was doing something and this too, continued throughout his life,
Wayne and Karen were together for 38 years, they had a good marriage and despite the struggles that all relationships face they remained together and committed to one another. Wayne could always make Karen laugh whether it was with him or at him. Sadly, Karen passed away in 2004 after a brief battle with Lung cancer.
Wayne eventually met Linda Time and they began a relationship together that was full of love and happiness. They always had a houseful. There was always fun, laughter and good times enjoyed by everyone who came to the cabin. It was not uncommon to go to visit and there to be a houseful of the Time family, many dogs and kids but everyone was always welcome.
Linda and her family welcomed Wayne with open arms and treated him like he had always been a part of their family. Linda always made Dwayne and Blair feel comfortable and welcome. She continued to bring Karen up in conversation throughout their relationship, which always meant a lot to both boys.
Linda and Wayne spent a number of years wintering in Texas. We often heard about the great friends they had made there and the fun they had at Happy hour and shuffling. Which it sounds like they were both very competitive about, as it was often a topic of conversation during those years.
They also had some very close friends at Candle Lake who were like family. They spent a lot of time with their neighbors, Jerry and Marge and Tim and Gayle and had a lot of fun. As well as countless other friends in the community.
Wayne also had a very good relationship with Linda’s children, Shaunene who Wayne always called Charlene, Lorelie and Greg, as well as their spouses and children.
In the past 2 years Wayne has had many health issues and was not able to be as active as he liked and this was a struggle for him at times. As his health deteriorated his needs became more and with his recent diagnosis of Cancer, his health really took a turn. Both Dwayne and Blair want to thank Linda for keeping him at home and helping care for him when he needed it for as long as was possible, knowing this was not easy for her. Wayne eventually moved into the Rose Garden Hospice in Prince Albert where he spent his last few days and they did an amazing job of caring for him, meeting his health needs and helping us navigate his health and eventual passing.
The phrase “one of a kind” is used a lot but this really applied to Wayne. He had a great sense of humor, was always willing to lend a hand when someone needed help and he often went above and beyond to help the people he cared about. He wasn’t always the person who told you how he felt but it came across in the way he treated people and his willingness to help out.
