Obituary of Doris Darlene Smith

Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Doris Darlene Smith was born on January 6, 1949, in Melfort, Sask. to Harry and Beatrice Nelson.
Doris attended school at Carrot River and MUCC, and after finishing school she began her career at the Melfort Hospital, a move that would mark the rest of her adult life. When Doris found what she loved she held on tight. Around the same time that she began working at the Melfort Hospital, she also met the man that would share the rest of her life, Terry Smith, who she married on August 15, 1970. Doris and Terry celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2020, with Terry passing away the following year. Through this loss Doris was supported by her dear friends and her family and healed through this difficult time of being alone after having Terry by her side for so many years.
Doris’s loves were simple, but deep: Her family, her family, and her family. But there was also plenty of room in her heart for her cats – or any stray cats that might happen by. And there was always space for the birds and squirrels that found food and home in her yard. She found a quiet joy of caring for her many tiger lilies in her yard, where she felt most at home and at peace. She was counting the days for spring to return and bring with it all the creatures with which she loved to share her yard.
Doris worked at the hospital for 50 years in different roles, and after a few attempts at retirement from the place that was her second home and in many ways her second family, Doris made the decision to fully retire in 2021. After retirement Doris spent her time watching over her family, those near and those far, who were never far from her heart, and nothing made her happier than getting her morning calls from her daughters, having morning coffee with her son, and regular calls from her grandkids. She also grew into a serious sports fan, with her first love being the Roughriders, but later finding sports for every season in the Blue Jays and the Oilers.
Doris and Terry were blessed with three children: Brenda, Dana, and Tara. Although the family grew to include 14 grandchildren and families moved all over the country, it was always a priority for her and the rest of the family to see each other as much as and whenever possible.
Doris will be deeply and sadly missed by her children and grandchildren: Brenda (Paul) Mellon, Seyfen, Jacob and Michael; Dana Smith, Gage, Adan, Sam, Mali, Kaiti and Milly; and Tara Spencer (Tyler), Ty (Sam), Will (Shelby), Jett, Chayce (Kyle) and Kamryn.
Doris was predeceased by her husband Terry Smith, her father Harry Nelson, her mother Beatrice Nelson, her mother and father-in-law, Ben and Helen Smith, and her sister Doreen and brothers-in-law Ken Myhre and Darwin Smith.
