Marilyn (Hegge) Dahl

The family of Marilyn (Hegge) Dahl announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Marilyn recently celebrated her 89th birthday at Parkland Place, where she enjoyed the final years of her life. Marilyn was a cherished mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will be missed.

Marilyn was the daughter of Thomas Julius and Elin Amolia (Bjorklund) Hegge who married on April 16, 1934. Mom was the youngest daughter of Julius and Elin and sister to Lavern Julius Hegge, Doris (Hegge) Gregor, Helen Deanna (Hegge) , Denis Allan Hegge. She enjoyed life growing up on the farm; often sharing stories of “bringing in the cows” to avoid the house work and cleaning. She best friend was her horse as a child on the farm. Later in life she and her siblings tried to travel together and visited their home farm a few times reminisce.

Mom described meeting Harvey Dahl in church. She was reading a passage from the bible and looked up to see him in the crowd, but didn’t know him. She described Harvey as polite, handsome and a gentleman when they dated. Marilyn and Harvey Dahl were married in Moose Jaw in October 1959.  A giant snow storm made things challenging for family and friends to attend, but those who could chipped in to help by shoveling snow and creating a new set up in order for the couple to be married.

Mom enjoyed her children Ross, Signey, Trudy, Whip, X, Y, and Z. She enjoyed becoming a Grandmother to: Wyatt and Walker Dahl; Steel and Holly Van Veen; Ryley, Leah and Lindsey Richards; Ty, Clay, Zane and Chase Dahl, Brittany and Richelle Taylor; Cassie, Maggie, Burke and Lexi Johnstone.

Mom wanted it said that God blessed her so; with many living children; who went on to be amazing parents with many amazing children and who are now parents themselves.  She was amazed each day, especially on the days she can remember so many of them.  She wishes her body had not given her so much grief that she could not see all these children and grandchildren and now great grand-children each day.  She loved them all and was so over joyed to see them whenever possible! She enjoyed the many pictures we took to parkland for her to see.  When she was in her 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s she so enjoyed counting all of her grandchildren as they were born and then adding them all to her birthday calendar.

Marilyn was a nurse at Melfort Union Hospital, Kindersley Hospital and Parkland Place here in Melfort. Mom loved nursing!  She was a nurse who was well known for her care for her patients as well as her kindness to the nurses and staff she worked alongside. She enjoyed the business of the ER and surgery at Melfort Union Hospital. Once I asked Mom, why Operating Room and Emergency nursing.  She replied cheekily, “Those patients were never ones to complain when they were on anaesthesia.” It was her nursing colleagues she loved the most though and she wanted to have it mentioned that they were the best friends to have no matter what; “always love a nurse!”

Living in Garrick, Saskatchewan was a highlight for Mom because the lake was close for fishing and her garden was expansive. The local community was friendly and fun.  She enjoyed the activities and the celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary at the hall. One year a large pumpkin crop lead the “Great Pumpkin Run”, this involved loading the cab of the truck with pumpkins and driving to see the grandchildren to carve pumpkins for Halloween that year. Harvey carved some of the pumpkins with power tools showing off his artistic talents with carving impressing the kids.

Fishing was always a good day for Mom, especially when she caught the biggest fish of day. Rey Taylor often took Mom fishing throughout the summers. A day on the water with kids and grandkids catching fish was fun and relaxing for her. Cooking that fish later was also part of the wonderful experience! Mom and Dad bought a pontoon boat and enjoyed it through the years. They also had a bus converted to a camper they enjoyed together for years.

Mom enjoyed a good meal and a story of what adventure one of her grandchildren or great-grandchildren were up that day. She enjoyed the hockey games, rodeo events, figure skating, dancing and hijinks the youngsters were up to at the time.

We can’t end without a full count of her kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
