Obituary
Jacob (Jack) Eisner was born in Togo, Saskatchewan on Feb 22, 1929 to Jacob and Anna (Ruf) Eisner. He grew up on the family farm, one of 6 children. Jack left the farm while in high school, attending Luther College in Regina as a boarding student. From there, he went on to the University of Saskatchewan, obtaining his law degree. As a young man Jack developed into an excellent baseball player, often being heavily recruited by many competitive small towns in eastern Saskatchewan or western Manitoba to pitch for their teams. One of the highlights of Jack’s ball career was playing against some barnstorming all star teams from the Negro leagues in the late 1940’s. On one memorable occasion, he outdueled the famous professional hall of famer, Satchel Paige to gain a victory for his team. Jack was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame for his exploits with the Bowsman team. Jack married Shirley Gorham on September 4, 1951, and they had two children, Stuart and Sherry. Following his graduation from the College of Law, Jack and Shirley settled in Melfort where he first articled with the firm of Hill Gale and Cairns, which had been initially established by OD Hill in 1911. Jack had a long illustrious career, which ended with him practicing with his son Stuart and son in law Michael Mahon. During his practice, Jack was named as a Queen’s Counsel (QC) and subsequently granted a life membership in the Law Society of Saskatchewan. After coming to Melfort, Jack developed a love for the game of golf and the Melfort Golf Course. He, along with a few others, rototilled the golf course to get it ready to seed the fairways and greens as it was developed in two stages. He was a competitive golfer, at one time holding the course record in Melfort. Jack won many tournaments, and in 1984 made the Saskatchewan Senior Men’s Golf team to represent the province in the Canadian Senior championship in PEI. He also served as President of the Saskatchewan Golf Association. He was also a competitive curler, often advancing out of the club playdowns and competing at the regional and provincial playdowns. Jack was heavily involved in his community, serving on many boards, both at a local and provincial level. He served as a councilor on Town Council, and was elected Mayor in 1967, a position he held until the end of 1970. He was also very involved in his church throughout his life. Another activity of his that many may not know about, was that for a number of years, Jack held a pilots license, and for a time, owned his own plane. After his retirement, he spent many winters enjoying the friends he developed in the Bahamas, many of whom he kept contact with until his final days. Jack enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren, and following their accomplishments, and getting to know his great grandchildren. In addition, he spent many hours renewing his passion for baseball, watching the Toronto Blue Jays, his favorite team, on television. From his time on the farm, he grew up with a love of animals, and always had a family pet or two, and was very fond of his cats in his final years. Jack is survived by his wife Shirley, daughter Sherry (Michael) Mahon, grandchildren Lindsay (Lincoln) Rathnam, Jeff Mahon and Rene Prefontaine, great grandchildren Peter Stuart Rathnam and Edward Jacob Rathnam, sister-in-law Muriel Eisner, brother-in-law Ted (Sylvia) Gorham and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Stuart Eisner, who died suddenly in 2003, parents Jacob and Anna, sisters Lila and Rae, brothers Dave, Ernie and George, and daughter in law Diane Eisner.
