Obituary
With heavy hearts, we share the news of the passing of our devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and dear brother Stanley Gordon Bethune. Stan passed away with his dedicated wife Gwen by his side on May 17, 2020, following his 73rd birthday. Stan was born May 13, 1947 to Ruby and Gordon Bethune. He was a farm boy from day one, living most of life on the family farm near Whittome with his older siblings and many foster siblings who shared their home. Stan and his sister Gloria were close in age, and would run through the farmyard barefoot, making mud pies and playing in the hayloft looking for kittens. Stan was in Air Cadets, earning his pilot’s licence. He took his schooling in Prescott and Melfort, and then attended the University of Saskatchewan earning a Diploma of Agriculture. He operated a mixed cattle farm for many years. He married Beverly (Green) and they had two sons in 1975, Jason and Grant. He loved vehicles, restoring many antique cars and trucks, with Grant often by his side. He was a member of the Melfort Legion 030 since 1980. He was a dedicated Christian and devoted follower of the Lord, saying grace at every meal and relying on the Bible and his faith to endure any hard times he faced. After Bev’s passing in 1988, he moved to Kelowna, but returned to his Melfort and his career with Saskatchewan Crop Insurance. He genuinely enjoyed getting to know each farmer and their family, a trait he extended to everyone he met. Stan was always more interested in talking about others than himself. During one of his many trips to have coffee at Smitty’s, he met Gwen and they shared the rest of his life together. Stan and Gwen married in 2002, and lived in Saskatoon and Melfort before moving to their acreage in Birch Hills – a dream for both of them. A favorite pastime was driving around to look at farms and land around the province, always with coffee in hand. Once he retired, he managed the Legion Place in Melfort, visiting with each person who passed by his door in his kind and caring way. Stan is survived by his wife Gwen, his son Jason (Diane) and grandson Oden and son Grant (Angela) and grandchildren Levi and Brynlee. He’s also survived by brother Blaine, sister Gloria, stepchildren Matt (Judy) and grandchildren Chance and Jasper, Melanie (Chris) and grandchildren Kaden and Adison and Jaime (John) and their children Rebecca (Jason and great-grandchildren Ryker and Theo), Colton, Braden, and Makenna, as well as by many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and all who knew him. He was predeceased by first wife Bev, his mother Ruby, father Gordon, and brother Raymond. Donations in Stan’s memory can be directed to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
