Obituary
It is with great sadness we announce the quiet passing of Russell Bacon on December 11, 2014 at the age of 92 at the Kinistino Jubilee Lodge. Russell was born on May 21, 1922, the only son of Chester and Sadie Bacon who also had three daughters.
After his schooling at Derby he went to the College of Agriculture in Saskatoon for a year. He then joined the Army and then transferred to the R.C.A.F. as Tail Gunner in 1943. He completed thirty-three missions over France, Belgium and Germany. He was discharge in the spring of 1945.
After the war Russell came back to Kinistino and took over the Bacon Farm. In November he married Theresa Boyd and they raised four children together.
Besides farming he liked working with bees. Russell gradually worked up to 1,200 hives. In 1975 he experimented with wintering bees under controlled environment which proved successful and is still being done today. Even up to the age of 87 he was enjoying catching queens to be used in the outfit or to be sold throughout North America. During his time with the bees, he was on the Boards of the Manitoba Cooperative Honey Producers Ltd. for a number of years.
Through-out his life he took great pride in being a Member of the Royal Canadian Legion. In 2001 Russell received the Meritorious Service award. Russell also received a Life Membership and has been a member for 66 years.
Russell’s lifelong passion was fishing, whether it was summer or winter! Whoever would go with him or later on, whoever would take him he was ready and willing to go. Winter was also enjoyed by curling and this took him many places and in 1984 won the Royal Canadian Legion Provincials Seniors Championship. Russell was also an avid gardener and would share the bountiful harvest with family and friends. Another hobby he enjoyed was working with burls, making clocks or tables. Also Russell’s love for all creatures big and small could be seen throughout his home.
Russell enjoyed his grandkids and great grandkids very much and enjoyed their many visits whenever they could come. Russell was fortunate his grandsons took interests in the same passions as he had and he was so proud when his grandsons carried on farming, beekeeping and fishing.
Russell was pre-deceased by his loving wife and farming partner Theresa of 57 years, his parents Chester and Sadie Bacon, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Mabel Boyd, his sister and brother-in-law, Walter and Phyllis Patterson, his sister-in-laws, Catherine LaRiviere, Olive Boyd and Bernice Lipscombe, his son-in-law, Wayne Smith, his grandson, Rob Turner, his nephew, Don Patterson, and niece Leslie Hebbert.
