World Famous (Secret?) Gingersnap Recipe (originally published in the Western Producer somewhere around 1965)
3/4 cup shortening (or margarine)
1 cup white sugar
1/4 cup blackstrap molasses
1 beaten egg
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 (but we put 2) teaspoons each of cinnamon, cloves and ginger (some add nutmeg)
Cream together butter and sugar. Add molasses and egg and blend well. Add pre-mixed dry ingredients and blend well. Form into small balls of around 1 inch diameter and roll in white sugar. Place on an ungreased baking pan, leaving room for them to spread while baking. DO NOT FLATTEN. Bake in a pre-heated 350 degree oven for 8-10 minutes (closer to 8).
