Obituary of Muriel Wittig

Muriel Ann Wittig (nee Young) was born on the family farm in the Stonehenge district south of Assiniboia, SK, on June 1, 1921. She was the oldest daughter of George and Elsie Young (Lake). Muriel had two older brothers and three younger sisters whom she helped care for while at home.
Muriel went to high school in Assiniboia. After graduation, she entered the nursing program and then graduated from the Moose Jaw General Hospital as a Registered Nurse in 1945. She started her nursing career at the Weyburn General Hospital and later moved to Melfort in 1947 to continue nursing.
In 1952, Muriel married Mervyn Wittig of Melfort. They lived on the family homestead and took over the family farm. They had two boys, Randy and Greg. Muriel gave up her nursing career so that she could stay at home to care for her sons and help out at the farm. Mervyn and Muriel operated the family farm until Mervyn passed away in 1981. Muriel remained on the farm until 2005 when she decided it was time to move to Melfort.
Muriel loved growing a large garden and planting flowers and shrubs while at the farm. She enjoyed bird watching, reading, knitting and crocheting. Her greatest joy was having her grandchildren around her though. She insisted on caring for them while her sons and their wives worked, and once her grandsons were older, she had them most of the summer and kept them busy helping maintain the farm yard site. Muriel spoiled all of her grandchildren throughout the years with their favorite cookies and meals. This carried on to her many great-grandchildren as well.
Muriel was known as one who was always there to lend a hand to anyone in need, whether it be family, friends or neighbors. She belonged to the Auxiliary at Nirvana Pioneer Villa and then later at Parkland Place until into her 90s. She spent many volunteer hours fundraising and assisting with functions for the residents.
Muriel remained in her own home in Melfort until June of this year when her health began to fail and she chose to relocate to Parkland Place. Throughout this last leg of her life’s journey, one word that has been used many, many times by countless people to describe our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother (lovingly known as Granny), was “amazing.” And that she truly was, not only to her family, but to all those who had the privilege to know her and care for her while in the Melfort Hospital and during her short stay at Parkland Place.
Muriel will be remembered lovingly by her sons, Randy (Sandra) Wittig and Greg (Susan) Wittig; her grandchildren, Tara (Jeff) Welch, Chris Wittig, Becky (Jason) Kaptein, Jonathan (Rae-lee) Wittig, Brennan Wittig, Kristina (Steven) Jack, and Jason (Melanie) Wittig; and her 20 great-grandchildren. She will also be remembered by her sister, Margaret Broeder, and her numerous nieces and nephews.
Muriel was predeceased by her husband, Mervyn, in 1981, her parents George and Elsie Young, brothers George and Jack Young, sisters Lila Johnson and Joyce Knox, niece Kira Broeder, brothers-in-law Earl Johnson, Murray Knox and Gordon Broeder, sister-in-law Mary Young, and many very dear friends.
As her family was her greatest treasure, Muriel’s final wish was that her family gather for a private graveside service and that they have a barbecue at the family farm to share their memories. Many times throughout the past years when her family would gather for a holiday meal, she would sit and gaze lovingly at them all. Memorial contributions in memory of Muriel may be directed to Parkland Place Residents Fund and/or Charity of Choice.  A private family graveside service was held at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
