It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Thelma Elizabeth Derkatz, who passed away peacefully on Dec 2, 2023 at the age of 88. Thelma was born on April 18, 1935, alongside her twin Betty just north of Beatty, Saskatchewan, to Art and Ellen Nelson.
Thelma grew up on the family farm north of Beatty, where she excelled in school, music and sports. She later attended business college where she graduated and began working as a secretary
in Melfort.
In 1957, Thelma married Cliff Derkatz, the love of her life. They were blessed with six children: Cindy, Kim, Tammy, Trent, Trevor, and Jodi. Cliff and Thelma started their family life together living in Kinistino, Squaw Rapids, Kindersley then settled in Naicam to raise their family. Thelma’s love of music and her natural talent was spread throughout the home and church, where she was the organist for many years.
In later years, Thelma and Cliff moved to Melfort where they spent their remaining years enjoying life and each other’s company.
Thelma was a devoted wife, mother, nanny, and great-grandmother. She will be deeply missed by her children, Cindy Lindsay, Kim (Donna) Derkatz, Tammy Derkatz (Lyle Olson), Trent (Wanda) Derkatz, Trevor (Rhonda) Derkatz, and Jodi (Shawn) Hollingsworth. She was a loving grandmother to Angela (Russ), Jeff (Jackie), Kurt (Charity), Jake (Katy), Austin, Abbey (Brandon), Ashley (Don), Stacey (Stephen), Brett (Candace), Brittney, Scott, Jared (Vanessa), Braeden, Brenden (Sarah), Kelsi (Alex), Kylie (Cole), Tanner (Gracie), Joel, Kate, and 16 great-grandchildren. As well she is survived by sister Lorna (Don) Spratt and brothers Elroy and Don (Darlene).
Thelma is predeceased by her husband Cliff, parents, Art and Ellen Nelson, her sisters Eileen Nordstrom and Betty Gregor, her brother Lloyd, and infant great-grandchildren Micah and Milan Derkatz.
Thelma will always be remembered for her kindness, her ability to make everyone feel special, and her love for her family and friends. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.
